On Your Own - Blur (from the album Blur)
When I was a child and Blur were still together, I only knew them as the guys who sang Song 2, otherwise known as the “Woo Hoo” song. It wasn’t until a few years ago when my brother decided to buy their greatest hits album, because apparently he was in a britpop phase or something. And then he handed it to me and I listened to it, not really expecting much. And what I got completely blew me away. Not only was every song utterly fantastic, but they were all fantastic in entirely different ways. Turns out Blur is a band that completely reinvented itself a few times, going from simple Britpop to Sgt. Pepper-esque whimsy to grunge. It’s all very 90’s and all very awesome, and I’m glad I discovered them.
Their lead singer, Damon Albarn, would go on to front Gorillaz, which are one of my all-time favorite bands ever. But that’s another story for another day.
