Rewrite - Paul Simon (from the album So Beautiful or So What)
Paul Simon is one of my favorite songwriters, and songs like this explain why. Its lyrics describe a life perfectly in a couple verses and a chorus in a way that not a lot of songs can. And musically, it sounds like a song you’ve heard a million times and nothing you’ve ever heard before at once. Its melody is really familiar in a nostalgic way, but the things he does with an acoustic guitar in this song are kind of unbelievable. And the fact that he’s still writing and recording stand-out songs like this now, at the age of 70? That’s just incredible.
